Take Melville to penalty kicks

Melville Millionaires 3  Melfort Mustangs 2 (SO)

Coming off a 2-1 win in Weyburn on Friday night the Melfort Mustangs were looking to keep the ball rolling with a win in the first half of a home and home with the Mils.

The Mustangs came out real strong in the first frame and carried most of the offensive pressure throughout the period. with 2.1 seconds left on the clock the Mils got an offensive zone faceoff, they won it to the front of the net and as the buzzer sounded Christian Magnus potted his 5th goal of the year. The referee called it a goal and the official scorekeeper marked it at 0.1 on the clock.

At the end of the day the SJHL doesn't have video review and it was clearly one heck of a close call. The referee made his best judgement and the Mils had a lead heading to the 2nd.

Anthony Pickering got the second period started with a bang has he notched a short-handed marker on a partial breakaway.

For Pickering, it is his 3rd shorthanded goal of the year and the Mustangs have now scored a league leading 5 times while down a man.

Brandon Formosa would give the Mustangs the lead a few minutes later when he dumped a puck in off the end glass, the puck took a weird hope towards the goal, hit Alex Wakaluk in the back of the head and went in. It wasn't pretty but it counts.

TJ Reeve would tie it up before the period expired with his 9th goal of the year on a great shot that beat Jesse Wilkins who made 26 saves on the night.

In the shootout Brandon Sloan, Jarret Zentner and Adam Fauchoux all missed leaving it in the hands of TJ Reeve who sniped under the bar to give the Mils the win.

The Mustangs fall to 6-7-0-1 while the Mils move to 12-2-0-1 and extend their lead atop the league standings.

These two teams will meet again on Tuesday night in Melville in a game you can hear on CK750 starting with the pre-game show at 7:15.
