Last second heroics life Hawks to victory

The Nipawin Hawks picked up a dramatic 4-3 win on home ice Tuesday night over the Melfort Mustangs.

Arty Kalashnikov scored with .7 seconds left to force overtime and then scored again in the shootout to lift the Hawks to victory.

The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first on goals from Kalashnikov and Carter Coben.

The Mustangs clawed their way back with three unanswered goals in the next forty minutes.

Godric Tham, Jay Aasen and Brandon Formosa gave the Mustangs a 3-2 lead with under three minutes to play.

Cue Arty.

With less than 5 seconds left Kalashnikov walked across the blueline and fired a desperation shot towards the goal that found its way through Jesse Wilkins and sent the Cage into a frenzy.

Overtime would solve nothing and both the Mustangs and Hawks first two shooters in the shootout couldn't score.

Kalashnikov would then cap off the unofficial hat-trick and set up his netminder to seal the victory.

BC product Jordan Liem went face to face with Jarret Zentner and made a highlight reel glove save to end the game in spectacular fashion.

Liem made 26 saves for his 3rd career victory while Jesse Wilkins made 35 in the loss.

Both teams struggled on the powerplay with the Hawks going 0/5 and the Mustangs 1/5.

The Mustangs are at home to Notre Dame on Saturday. Game time at The Northern Lights Palace is 7:30.
