The Nipawin Hawks and Melfort Mustangs have hooked up for deadline day deal.

The Hawks acquired 20 year old Carter Berg from Melfort for 18 year old David Heath and future considerations.

Berg heads to Nipawin after a career that spanned four seasons in Melfort.

The Saskatoon native was reassigned to the Mustangs in 2009 from the Chilliwack Bruins and after returning to the WHL for a brief stint with the Calgary Hitmen Berg found a home in Melfort.

Berg played in 142 games for the Mustangs and was named their captain at the start of this season.

"It's tough to replace a guy like Carter Berg" said Mustangs GM and Head Coach Gavin Holcomb.

''He brought intangibles to our hockey club... however it's not just one guy that makes up a team and now theirs an opportunity for guy's to step up and fill that hole."

Heath comes to the Mustangs in his rookie season in the SJHL after finishing his AAA career with the Southwest Cougars in Manitoba.

"We are giving up a great young defenseman in David Heath. He'll be outstanding in this league for many years and he is a great person on top of it" said Hawks GM Doug Johnson.

The 18 year old Melita product stands 6 foot 2 and had 19 points and 56 penalty minutes with the Cougars last season.

Heath appeared in 13 games for the Hawks this season, registering one assist.

"We're very excited about Dave" said Holcomb.

"He's gotten his feet wet in the league and is going to be a guy that will jump in and play a regular right away. We like his size and he is a guy that we're going to have for a few years here."

Heath will wear #18 for the Mustangs and is expected to be in the lineup tonight vs Weyburn.
