Stangs take game one

Melfort Mustangs 3   Humboldt Broncos 2  (OT)
(Melfort leads best-of-7 North Semi-Final 1-0)

The Humboldt Broncos fired everything but the kitchen sink at Jesse Wilkins on Friday night and if they had, the Calgary native likely would have stopped that too.

Wilkins made 50 stops, a number of them in spectacular fashion to lead the Mustangs to a 4-3 overtime win in game one of the North Semi-Final.

The Mustangs jumped up to a 2-0 lead in the first period on just 5 shots. Brandon Parrone snapped home a point shot on the powerplay on just the 2nd shot on net to silence the otherwise rowdy crowd in Humboldt.

Just moments later, Brandon Sloan ripped great wrist shot home on a perfect pass from Godric Tham. For Tham, it was his 2nd assist of the night and the start of a three point night for the former UFA Bison.

In the 2nd period the Broncos needed just 14 seconds to get right back into it. Kam Ballas and Neil Landry scored on a pair of furious shifts to re-ignite the crowd and tie it back up a two.

Both teams exchanged a ton of chances in the third period but neither team could find the back of the net.

Shots after regulation were 47-22.

In overtime it was Godric Tham scoring his 4th goal of the playoffs after he stripped the Bronco defender of the puck and slipped it into a tiny window under the arm of Matt Hrynkiw.

The Mustangs went 1/3 on the powerplay while the Broncos went 1/4.

Jesse Wilkins earned 1st star honors, while Matt Hrynkiw struggled at times allowing two goals on the first three shots he faced.

The win is the Mustangs 4th in a row and puts them in the drivers seat heading back to the Palace for game two tonight.

Puck drop is 7:30, the 105 CJVR broadcast begins at 7:15.
