Mustangs Lose WCC Finale

Fort McMurray Oil Barons 3  Melfort Mustangs 2  (OT)

For the 2nd time in the 2015 Western Canada Cup the Melfort Mustangs found themselves headed to overtime after allowing a goal in the final minute.

Mark Drohan scored with just 16 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game a two and send the game to extra time.

After a scoreless first period, it was a pair of powerplay goals that would get the ball rolling.

Regan Wilton would tip home an Adam Fauchoux point shot midway through the middle frame. The Meskanaw, SK product's first of the tourney would give Melfort the 1-0 lead.

Near the end of the period, with Tristan Frei serving a double minor, Jetlan Houcher went coast to coast past all four Mustang penalty killers and tied it up with his first of the tournament.

The Mustangs would regain the lead in the third period as Teal Sobkowicz ripped home his first of the tournament after a great setup from Landon Robin and Dakota Boutin.

In the dying, minute with the extra attacker on the ice for Fort Mac the Mustangs would ice the puck. Setting up a carbon copy finish to the Stangs 2nd game of the tournament.

The Barons would win the draw and snap home the equalizer to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

In a game that meant home ice advantage in the 3-4 page playoff game on Saturday, neither team wanted to give up the game winner.

After exchanging chances early in the frame, Mitchell Vanderlaan poked a puck past the feet of David Heath and walked in and potted his first of the WCC to give the Barons the win and a round robin record of 3-1.

The loss does little for the Mustangs in the standings, who will square off against Fort Mac again on Saturday afternoon.

The winner of that game will earn a birth to the RBC Cup in Portage due to the Terriers being in the 1-2 Championship game vs Penticton.

Game time Saturday is 2:30pm.
