Four months removed from hoisting the Canalta Cup, the Melfort Mustangs kicked off the 2015-2016 season in front of their home fans with another victory, and it was some of last year's key contributors leading the charge.
The Mustangs' top line of Travis Mayan, Tristan Frei and Justin Boyer are all back, and were all over the scoresheet in Friday night's 3-1 win over visiting La Ronge. Frei, the new captain, scored twice and added one assist, Boyer had three helpers and Mayan chipped in a pair of assists, as the trio combined for 8 points on three Melfort goals. 17-year-old defenseman Curran Reeve also scored in his first SJHL game.
Goaltender Richard Palmer, also back looking to defend the title, put up 22 saves on 23 shots in game one.
Kris Joyce turned aside 26/29 shots for the Ice Wolves, and Nakeho Lamothe provided their lone goal.
