As this years edition of the Melfort Mustangs has hit the Christmas break, some interesting statistical comparisons can be made to last years Canalta Cup championship team. For comparison purposes we will use the first 34 games last year (even though they had played 36 to the break) which is the number of games played this season thus far. Last years team had a record of 24-5-1-4 for 53 points versus this years record of 24-6-3-1 for 52 points. In terms of scoring, last years Mustang team had 119 goals for, 73 goals against for a plus 46 differential. This year we are 134 goals for, 92 goals against for a plus 42 differential and good for first in the league in goals for per game and third in goals against per game. Another similarity to last year is, to no surprise, Travis Mayan is once again the leagues leading scorer with 31 goals, 28 assists for 59 points through 33 games played- 11 points clear of anyone else. Melfort also has the leagues leading defenseman in scoring with Eric Sinclair's 6 goals, 17 assists for 23 points (tied with Battlefords Connor Sych). One final similarity to last year is once again Melfort is in a race for first in the league standings with a western team. At the break last year Melfort was in first place with a narrow lead over the Kindersley Klippers. This year Melfort is in first place in the league with a 1 point lead over the Battlefords North Stars. While there is a lot of hockey yet to play, the Mustangs have to be thrilled with their results at the break. Happy holidays to all of our staff, players, parents, fans, billets, volunteers and sponsors!
