Mustangs have Stranglehold on the Series

Fans were in for a treat at the Palace on Friday Night as Game 5 was easily the best of the series and needed overtime before things would be settled. The first period was a tough, bring it out frame which ended in a scoreless tie. The second saw the Bombers top line put the visiting team up one before the Mustangs Minion line replied 3 minutes later on a beautiful setup from Travis Mayan to Justin Boyer who made no mistake. 6 minutes after that a thread the needle type pass from Travis Mayan sent Wyatt Hinson in on a clear cut breakaway which he buried to make it a 2 - 1 game for the home side at the end of two periods. Just a couple minutes into the third the Bombers tied things up on a strange play where it appeared Mustangs goalie Richard Palmer had the puck covered but play was allowed to continue and Rylee Zimmer tapped in the unassisted goal.

Cue the overtime heroics. In an extra frame that was dominated by the Mustangs, Craig Leverton undressed the bombers defence and roofed a backhand shot to end the game at the 12 minute mark and sent the sold out Northern Lights Palace crowd into a frenzy! That makes 8 points for Leverton in the final series alone and he has easily been the Mustangs most consistent player in what has been a back and forth series thus far.

Game 6 goes Sunday night in Flin Flon at 7:30 Manitoba time (6:30 local time). The Mustangs will have a chance to clinch their second straight Canalta Cup title.
