The Melfort Mustangs had to host their former goaltender on Saturday night, but they didn't seem to mind slipping pucks past Evan Plotnik in new Melville Millionaire attire.
Melfort gave up the first goal of the contest eight and a half minutes into the first frame, but were quick to respond with Justin Ball scoring less than four minutes later. His goal came with help from Carson Albrecht and Wyatt Hinson. Later in the first period Kalem Zary capitalized on Melfort's first power play of the game and put the Mustangs up 2-1 with Dakota Boutin and Tanner Zentner adding their names to assist column.
Melfort kept the momentum going into the second, when another power play led to another Zary goal, coming off a feed from Dakota Boutin and Miles Warkentine. While Melfort seemed to be feeding off their success and using it to drive their offence, that was the last goal they managed of the night.
Melville put up a valiant effort, returning the game to a one goal difference halfway through the third period. The Mustangs were mentally prepared however, and managed to hold off the offensive pressure and keep the puck in Melville's end. With a minute left in the game Melville pulled Evan Plotnik for an extra attacker, but smart defensive playing by the Mustangs killed the clock before the visitors could score an equalizer.
Ryan Ternes had the starting nod for Melfort, winning his second straight game with his new team. He stopped 25 of 27 shots and earned himself the third star of the game. Dakota Boutin with two assists claimed second star, and Kalem Zary with two goals was named the first star of the night. The Melfort Mustangs advance to 5-7-0-1 on the season, and are prepping to hit the road for a tough match up against the league leading Humboldt Broncos on Tuesday.
