Melfort seems to be hitting their stride in a completely different game against the Broncos

Melfort has really had a rollercoaster of a season start so far. After winning three straight to open the season, the Mustangs had lost the next 8 games in a row, including an absolute thumping by the Humboldt Broncos that finished 6-1. Following that skid, some new faces joined the roster and our existing team started to play like they had something to prove, resulting in two wins back to back. That streak came to an end last night, but it was a game that was proof Melfort is beginning to hit their stride.

Flashback to September 30th, the Humboldt Broncos brought their red hot offense to the Northern Lights Palace and put up six goals against the Mustangs, while allowing only one goal on 15 shots in return. Moving forward to October 18th, and Melfort was a different team in the Elgar Petersen Arena. Regulation Time finished tied at two, with Melfort's goals coming from Justin Ball (assisted by Carson Albrecht and Dakota Boutin) and Kayle Tosh (assisted by Kalem Zary and Miles Warkentine).

Overtime didn't settle anything, so this game saw a shootout. Dakota Boutin, Jaxon Joseph and Kalem Zary were Melfort's shooters, but alas, none of them could finish against Garret Mason, who had an excellent night in goal. Ryan Ternes had a good showing as well, but unfortunately Humboldt's first shooter managed to slip one by him.

Despite the loss, this game had some major positive point for the Mustangs:

They registered a total of 38 shots against Humboldt, over double the amount from their first encounter.

They stayed out of the penalty box for the entire third period, only taking 3 penalties in the entire game.

Melfort's record currently sits at 5-7-0-2 which is good for 12 points on the season and 8th place in the league. The Mustangs are back on the road again Friday night when we will be going down south to play the Yorkton Terriers.
