As the Melfort Mustangs head into the 2018 portion of the season the focus will now ramp back up to hockey, and competing as a top club in the SJHL once again. After enjoying one of the longest Holiday breaks in the SJHL the Mustangs will start 2018 on the road, in Estevan and Weyburn this weekend. Their first games since December 22nd 2017.
After starting the season strong the Mustangs begin their January schedule sporting a 22-7-4-1 record on the season. They capped off 2017 with a home win against the Humboldt Broncos. Currently 4th place in the SJHL Standings the Mustangs have the 3rd most points in the league trailing the Battlefords North Stars by 1, and the Nipawin Hawks by 7. The push will continue for a higher position come playoffs and with the SJHL trade deadline coming all teams in the league are sure to be busy for the next week or so.
January and February will be the busiest months of the season for the Stangs as they play 10 contests in January and another 11 in February. They meet division rivals the Nipawin Hawks 3 times in February with possible playoff implications on the line for one of, if not both teams. They will also see the Flin Flon Bombers 4 times over the next two months and again to wrap up the season in March. Melfort will also meet the La Ronge Ice Wolves a pair of times before the season is over, with a home and home set for next weekend.
For now the team is back in Melfort following their break. The Mustangs will practice in Star City this week to prepare for the road trip. The Northern Lights Palace is preoccupied as the Viterra Provincial Sask Scotties are taking place. Female curlers from across the province are in Melfort to play for the provincial title and we couldn’t be more excited to share our amazing arena with the best curlers in Saskatchewan!
Next Home Game: Tues Jan 9th 2018 vs Flin Flon Bombers, 7:30pm.
