Catz N Jammers February 3 Stars

The Month of February has come and gone, and the Melfort Mustangs are now getting ready for playoffs to begin in March. We can look back at our February Players of the Month thanks to Catz N Jammers in Melfort! Long time supporters of the Mustangs our friends at Catz N Jammers have brought to us the Player of the Month all season long, now for the 6th time this year!

Shawn Parkinson

Shawn Parkinson has been named a Star of the Month. Not only that but he was named the SJHL’s Goaltender of the Month for February! Parkinson, from Victoria BC, ended the year in spectacular fashion by recording shutouts in four of his last five games to push the Mustangs into the number three seed for the playoffs.  Parkinson blanked Weyburn with 15-saves on February 22nd. After a loss to Yorkton, Parkinson then rattled off three more shutouts with 23 and 26 save efforts over Nipawin to complete home and home sweep and then he turned back 29 shots to blank Flin Flon on the last night of the regular season to go 8-2-and-3 in February with a 1.57-GAA and .935-SPCT during the month.  Overall, Parkinson led the league this season with a 2.36-GAA and he was 25-12-5-and-1 with a .919-SPCT.

Tian Rask

Tian Rask has been named a Mustang Star for February as well. Rask led the team with 14 points in March. Scoring seven times and adding seven assists in 12 games played. Rask, from Saskatoon SK, was acquired by the Mustangs on Dec 1st and made an immediate impact with the team. Tian played 26 games with the Mustangs to end the regular season and scored 12 goals while adding 16 assists. He finished over a point per game in the regular season finishing with 28 points in 26 games. Rask was acquired from the Canmore Eagles of the Alberta Junior Hockey League after two and a half seasons with the Eagles.

Ben Tkachuk

Ben Tkachuk is the other star of the month for February. The Mustang rookie is enjoying his first season with the team as only a 17-year old. Ben kicked off the month of February with goal against the Estevan Bruins. In the month, he finished with four goals, the most he’s scored this season in a single month. He added five assists and finished with nine points. The highlight of the season for Tkachuk came on February 15th against Melville, he ripped the Millionaires for a goal and two assists that night, his only three point game of the season. On the year Tkachuk has 11 goals and 10 assists. Good enough for 21 points in 56 games.

The Mustangs are off today and will begin their first round SJHL Quarter-Final Series with the Estevan Bruins tomorrow. Melfort has home ice advantage in the series and will host games 1 and 2, as well as 5 and 7 if necessary. The team travels to Estevan for games 3 and 4, as well as 6 if necessary. Tickets can be bought for the first two games online at tickets.melfortmustangs.com!
