Melfort Gives the Bruins a Run for Their Money

The Melfort Mustangs had a hard fought game against the second place Estevan Bruins on Thursday night. The Mustangs fell behind only six minutes into the game, and it took until the dying minutes of the game to rectify that. Estevan was up two to zero at the start of the second, and would increase their lead to three by the time Melfort got their feet under them. With five minutes to go in the second, Reed Gunville began Melfort’s comeback by netting a goal from Adam Hergott and Kalem Zary. With one second remaining in the second, Zary would close the Bruins’ lead to a single goal with help from Gunville and team captain Sam Houston.  The third period would hold that score until Melfort elected to pull Evan Plotnik and Rock Ruschkowski would capitalize on the man advantage, with assists once again going to Houston and Gunville. Overtime would solve nothing, as the play went back and forth with both teams getting chances, so a shootout was needed to determine a winner. Six shooters per side were needed, with Kalem Zary and Justin Ball scoring goals for Melfort and Evan Plotnik played solid between the pipes. An unexpected slap shot from the hash marks proved to be the shot that finished it as Estevan won with a score of 4-3. Melfort still earns a point for taking the game to a shootout, and if the boys can play that well against the second place team in the league then there should be good things in store for the rest of the season. The Mustangs’ currently sit at 12-14-1-4 for a total of 29 points and ninth place overall. Melfort will be back in action Saturday, December 10th hosting the visiting Weyburn Red Wings. Puck drop is 7:30, and remember fans, it’s our annual teddy bear toss game, so bring those animals to be thrown on the ice following Melfort’s first goal.
