Mustangs beat Bombers. Head to Flin Flon for Rematch

Tonight is game #2 of the SJHL season for the Melfort Mustangs(1-0-0-0) and Flin Flon Bombers(0-1-0-0). Tonight it’s the Mustangs turn to travel as they head North to Flin Flon for the Bombers home opener. Following a 3-1 win at the Northern Lights Palace on Friday, the Mustangs were snowed in on Saturday and unable to make the trip. Today has been deemed the makeup date as in an already covid shortened season the teams are taking no time in getting back on the ice.

On Friday night, Cameron Rimstad tipped home the Gabe Odowichuk point shot to give the Mustangs an early 1-0 lead. For Rimstad it was his first SJHL goal in his first SJHL game. Melfort led 1-0 after the first period.

In the second the Mustangs would add to their lead. Colton Schell was set up in front thanks to a pair of passes from Ethan Regnier and Seth McCulloch. Schell tucked it up under the bar to make it 2-0. It was well noted the Mustangs took to the number 27 embedded into the ice for their goal celebration. Flin Flon would add a late period goal to cut into the lead. 2-1 Mustangs, after 40 minutes.

Flin Flon would press as the third period opened but Ethan Regnier would put it away for the Mustangs. He also went up under the bar as he flipped it over the Flin Flon net minder Cal Schell. Regnier’s first as a Mustang put the home side up 3-1 as they would take the first game of the year.

Joel Favreau was outstanding in the Mustang net. He made 31 saves on 32 shots for his first career SJHL win. The former PA Minto goaltender remains unbeaten in the Mustangs net following a 2-0 record in the preseason.
