The Melfort Mustangs(14-6-1-0) kicked off a 2 game road trip with a big 4-1 win over the Battleford North Stars(12-7-1-3) last night. For the Mustangs it was their 4th straight win and came as their first against the Battleford’s this season. It leapfrogs the Mustangs two spots in the standings as they jump from 7th all the way to 5th with the win. Currently the Mustangs sit with the 3rd highest win percentage in the league. As they sit with games in hand on a few teams still higher in the standings.
Last night the Mustangs jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead on Justin Ball’s 18th of the season at the 5:33 mark of the first period. His team leading 18th goal. In the second period, Braeden Young would score his first career SJHL goal at 3:45 to make it 2-0 Melfort. Congratulations to Braeden Young on that impressive feat. Justin Ball would net his 2nd of the night and 19th of the season a short while later to make it 3-0 Mustangs. Battlefords would answer though as Doig would cut into the lead making it a 3-1 going to the third period. In the third, Melfort would lock it down. Thanks to great goaltending from Shawn Parkinson. Zack Smith picked up his 4th goal of the season as the Mustangs would role to a 4-1 win cruising to their 14th win on the year. Shawn Parkinson got the win in net. He’s now 2-0 in a Melfort jersey and sits with a sparking 1.00 GAA and .962 Save Percentage over those games.
Tonight the boys hit the road a little further south from Battlefords as they will meet the Kindersley Klippers(13-6-2-1) for the 4th time already this season. Game time is 7:30pm from Kindersley and you can hear the game on CK750 at 7:15pm.
