Mustangs Grab 3 of 4 Points on the Weekend


The Melfort Mustangs took 3 of 4 possible points this weekend splitting a home and home with the Humboldt Broncos. The weekend didn’t finish exactly the way the Mustangs had hoped but after a 4-1 victory on home ice Friday, the Broncos bounced back with the 2-1 Shootout win on Saturday in Humboldt.

Broncos-1 @ Mustangs-4 Final

The Mustangs jumped out to take the lead midway through the second period on Friday night. Andrew Thompson would find the back of the net for his second goal of the season. The great goaltender battle would continue right through into the third when Melfort would break it open slightly.  Justin Ball would score his 4th and on the power play followed by Adam Hergott who’d get his 3rd of the season. Humboldt would then score their only goal of the night, as Matthieu Gomercic would score his first of the season. The Mustangs would make it a 4-1 final in the third as Loch Morrison would score his 8th of the season, and fourth in two games. With the win the Mustangs moved to 10-1-1 on the season. Hunter Arps would get his first win of the season between the pipes for Melfort.

Mustangs-1 @ Broncos-2 Final/SO

On Saturday night it again was a great goaltender battle, this time Evan Plotnik got the call for the Mustangs. After an unfortunate break the Humboldt Broncos would jump out to the early lead, Kaleb Dahlgren would get his 4th of the season with 4 minutes to play in the first. Jacob Wassermann would keep the door shut all night until the 8 minute mark of the third period, as Andrew Thompson would finally get the Mustangs on the board. His 3rd of the season made it a 1-1 game. The back and forth chances would continue, but ultimately overtime would solve nothing and it would go to the shootout.

With the Shootout loss the Mustangs would slip to 10-1-1-1 on the season. Next up the Mustangs are on the road this weekend. They meet the Battlefords North Stars on Friday, and then swing south to play Kindersley on Saturday. Both games are 7:30pm starts
