Mustangs head into Christmas with home game against Humboldt

The Melfort Mustangs will head into the Christmas Break tonight but not until after what should be one of the best nights of the SJHL season. The Mustangs will host the Humboldt Broncos in their final game of 2017, while it’s also Teddy Bear Toss night followed by a family skate with the Mustangs. Game time is 7:30pm from the palace and following the game everyone is invited to skate with the team.

The Melfort Mustangs head into tonight’s game coming off a big road win over the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday. The Mustangs got up early on the Klippers, chased goaltender Justin Close in the first period and rolled to a 6-3 victory. It was a big win for the Stangs as they were coming off tough road losses to Battlefords and Yorkton previous.  On the season the Mustangs sit with a record of 21-7-4-1.

The Humboldt Broncos have also been off this week as they last played the Nipawin Hawks in a home and home on the weekend. The Hawks won both contests 3-2 in Humboldt on Friday and 3-2 in Nipawin on Saturday. On the season the Broncos have a 19-11-3-2 record.

The big story line in tonight’s game centers around Mustang Tristen Elder, and Bronoco Jaxon Joseph. The two were traded for one another at the end of October and this is the first meeting between the two on opposite sides. Since the trade Elder has 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points in 12 games. For the Broncos Joseph has 12 goals and 7 assists for 19 points in 17 games played. Another aspect of the trade saw the Mustangs send 2001′ D Kade Olsen to the Humboldt Broncos. Olsen has spent the majority of the season with the Midget AAA Beardy’s Blackhawks but was called up for his first SJHL game with Humboldt last weekend.
