The Melfort Mustangs will kick off the 2018 portion of their schedule tonight as they head out on the road to meet the Estevan Bruins. Game time is 7:30pm from Estevan. The road trip continues tomorrow with a date with the Weyburn Red Wings. The Mustangs have been moved out of their home in the Northern Lights Palace this week because of the Saskatchewan Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts. The week long curling championship wraps up on Sunday with the Mustangs getting back on the ice early next week.
For the Mustangs they’ve enjoyed one of the longest breaks in the SJHL, having not played since December 22nd 2017, a full 14 days away from game action. The break may have come at a not so opportune time for the Stangs, as they were riding a two game win streak. A 6-3 win over Kindersley and a 6-2 win over Humboldt had the Mustangs riding high right into the Christmas break. Melfort starts the New Year with a 22-7-4-1 record good enough for 3rd place in the SJHL.
The Estevan Bruins have already played two games since the holiday break, sweeping a home and home with Weyburn 5-2 and 5-1. With those wins over their biggest rival they now have a 6 point lead on the Red Wings for top spot in the Viterra Division. The Bruins will host the Melfort Mustangs along with the Humboldt Broncos this weekend, as they look to keep widening the gap between themselves and Weyburn, as well as catch the top teams in the SJHL.
Tonight’s meeting is the 4th and final this season between the Mustangs and Bruins. The home team has won all 3 previous.
