Mustangs meet North Stars for first time at NLP

The Melfort Mustangs are back on the ice tonight after having an 8 game win streak snapped at the hands of the Humboldt Broncos Saturday night. The Battleford’s North Stars are in town to meet the Mustangs for the 3rd meeting of the season.

For the Mustangs the challenge doesn’t get easier as the 2nd placed Battleford’s North Stars are in town playing on back to back nights. The North Stars suffered only their 7th regulation loss last night to their rivals from Kindersley 4-2. It looks as if it could be a big win for the Klippers as they look to guarantee themselves a spot in the SJHL Playoffs this season. The Battleford’s have picked up where they left off last season and with a record of 30-7-2-0 and are challenging for the overall number 1 seed in the SJHL once again.

The Mustangs will look to start another win streak tonight after dropping a heart breaker to Humboldt on Saturday. The Broncos scored with two seconds to play as they defeated the Mustangs 3-2. It ended a streak of victories that dated all the way back to Dec 15th. 8-game win streaks would be a big deal to a lot of teams, but for the Mustangs it only ties their longest of the season. After starting the year 8-0-0-0 Melfort has now reeled off two very impressive win streaks this season.

Tonight’s game is the first of two meetings between the Mustangs and North Stars at the Northern Lights Palace this season. The North Stars will be back at the Palace on Feb 23rd for the final meeting. The North Stars have already hosted their two meetings, winning both, 3-2 in OT on Oct 20th and 3-2 on Dec 15th.
