Mustangs win both against Hawks, move up in SJHL standings

The Melfort Mustangs(7-3-1-0) have moved into 2nd place in the Sher-Wood division following a sweep over the rival Nipawin Hawks. Winning 2-0 and 3-1 has vaulted the Melfort Mustangs passed the Hawks in the standings and just 3 points back of Flin Flon, with 3 games at hand.

On Friday night the Mustangs were led by Hunter Arps. Hunter stopped all 26 shots he faced as Melfort Blanked the Hawks. The Mustangs got on the board in the third period as Justin Ball scored his 11th and 12th goals of the season in the win!

Moving to Saturday, Melfort came out flying and got the first goal of the game 59 seconds into the 2nd period as Colin Schmidt would get his 2nd of the season. Carson Albrecht scored his 5th of the season shortly after and the Mustangs had a 2-0 lead. Nipawin would cut the lead to 2-1 after two periods and we’d head to the third in a one goal game. Kayle Tosh would put the Mustangs back up by 2 goals, 30 seconds into the third period, and Hunter Arps would once again hold off the Hawks late attack in the 3-1 victory.

With the win Hunter Arps would earn Goaltender of the Week honors. Allowing just 1 goal over two games. His 0.50 GAA and .983 SV Percentage was the best in the SJHL during the week.

Up next the Mustangs head on the road this weekend. Back to back road games in Estevan and Weyburn, on Friday and Saturday should prove to be tough tests for the Mustang boys. It will be the first meetings of the season against the Bruins and Red Wings. Both games begin at 7:30pm and can be heard on CK750!
