The Battleford North Stars took a 2-1 series lead in the Canalta Cup Finals last night. Thanks to a 4-2 win at the Northern Lights Palace, the North Stars have now jumped back in front in the chase for the cup. The Melfort Mustangs have a big opportunity on home ice tonight to once again get this series tied as it shifts back to Battleford for Game 5 on Friday.

The Mustangs opened the scoring last night when Tyson Meyers picked up his second goal of the finals. Justin Ball ripped a shot from the top of the circle and Joel Gryzbowski left a big rebound for Meyers to clean up. The Northstars would tie the game at 1 with just over 5 minutes left in the first period.

In the second, Regan Doig would put the Stars up 2-1. But Justin Ball would answer back with a big power play goal. He would get a drop pass from Colin Schmidt as he walked into the high slot and ripped the puck past Gryzbowski blocker side. With just 15 seconds left in the second period Braydon Buziak would put the stars back up 3-2.

In the third period the Mustangs would press hard. But they couldn’t solve Gryzbowski, as the Stars would tack on one more and skate to a 4-2 victory in Game 3.

The Mustang net was split between Shawn Parkinson and Noah Giesbrecht last night. It wasn’t a result of poor play as Parkinson was run into by a North Star forward in the 2nd period. Due to the contact Parkinson had made way to Giesbrecht to take over and finish the game.
