Jesse Wilkins Shines Despite Terrier OT Win

The Melfort Mustangs hit the road Friday for their second to last overnight trip of the 2012/2013 season, with Jesse Wilkins turning in one of his strongest performances of the season, making 49 saves in a 1-0 overtime loss to the hands of the Yorkton Terriers.

On the powerplay, Tyler Giebel potted his 17th of the season with just :04 remaining on the clock in the extra frame to win the game, with the assists to Chase and Brady Norrish.

The Mustangs fired 30 shots at Dawson MacAuley, with several scoring chances being created in the middle period. Melfort was outshot 18-9 after 20 minutes, but a much stronger 2nd brought the Mustangs shot count up to 20, but strong goaltending at both ends kept the game scoreless.

Patrick Martens and Chase Norrish gave the Terriers several chances to win throughout the night, with Wilkins playing strong in position on each and every opportunity. Norrish made 3 seperate end to end rushes in the game, providing a defensive-offensive spark, while players like Anthony Pickering and Brennan Bosovich received increased ice time for the Mustangs, who dressed just 15 skaters.

Despite losing the game, the Mustangs kept their heads high after giving the SJHL's top team on home ice a run for their money; and with a single point, the 'Stangs now sit just 1 back of La Ronge for 5th in the Bauer Conference.

Melfort travels south to Notre Dame tonight, with the pregame show available on CK750 beginning at 7:15 with Dustin Scafe. You can also listen online at!
