Humboldt Broncos 7 Melfort Mustangs 1
(Humboldt leads best-of-seven series 2-1)
The Humboldt Broncos finally found their stride in game three and showed why they are the defending SJHL champions in a 7-1 win over Melfort.
Special teams was the story once again but this time it was the Broncos penalty kill providing some offense. John Lawrence finished off a 2 on 1 with Dylan Fluter on a short-handed rush in the 1st period to open the scoring.
Moments later Anthony Pickering would score his first of the series on a rebound in the slot.
The Broncos got two more in the first as Braden LaRoque and Joey Davies tacked on singles to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead after twenty.
Shots in the first were 22-7 for Humboldt.
The second period was much quieter as both teams went without a goal, but both teams did have their chances. The shot clock after 40 read 33-18 for the Broncos.
A late 2nd period penalty allowed the Broncos to start the final frame on the powerplay and it was Joey Davies again netting his 2nd of the night just 37 seconds into the period to make it 4-1.
Davies would score another powerplay marker just 2 minutes later to give him the hat-trick on the night and five goals in three games!
Carter Page and Dave Miazga would add singles 8 seconds apart to chase Jesse Wilkins to the bench.
Wilkins stopped 41 of 48 shots while Patrick Johnson came on and made 3 saves.
Matt Hyrinkiw had an easy night kicking aside just 27 shots to earn his 2nd playoff victory in 2013.
WIth the win, the Broncos take a 2 games to 1 lead in the series heading back to Melfort Wednesday night.
