(Canton, N.Y.)- Senior John Payne (Port Moody, B.C.), a forward on the men’s ice hockey team, has received the coveted Chancellor’s Award for Student Excellence.

The sports management major is the fourth SUNY Canton student-athlete to earn the award in the past four years joining former women’s basketball player Julie Vanderwiel in 2010 and former soccer players Angie Waryasz and Justin Martin in 2011.

“The students we honor have strong records of achievement as student leaders, scholar athletes, aspiring artists and community volunteers,” said SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher at the April 4th awards ceremony in Albany. “By exhibiting excellence in class, on campus and in their local communities, these students truly represent the power of SUNY and we honor them with great pride.”

Payne wrapped up an illustrious career on the ice this past winter.  During his four-year career he scored 53 goals with 78 assists for 131 points.  He served as a captain in both his junior and senior years and off the ice has excelled in the classroom maintaining a high grade-point average that has earned him a spot on the  President’s Honor List or Dean’s Honor List every semester at SUNY Canton.  Payne has been named an Academic All-American by the American Collegiate Hockey Association, an Academic All-Star by the Eastern Collegiate Hockey League, and has been named to the All-Academic Team by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association.  He has been an active member of SUNY Canton’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the Sports Management Student Association.  Payne is always one of the first people to volunteer for community service projects such as Roos Hop to Help Day and the Reading Roos program.

“The team’s success during John’s tenure has been due in large part to not only his physical abilities, but the manner in which he conducts himself as a person,” said assistant athletic director Matt Metcalf.  “He consistently displays a level of class that is not often seen of young men, and that behavior carries over to his teammates, coaches and other athletic staff members.”

Payne is finishing his degree this semester doing an internship with the Manchester Monarchs of the American Hockey League.  SUNY Canton senior Zachery Smith, an industrial technology management major, also received a Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence this year.
