MADISON, Wis. – Bemidji State University goaltender Jesse Wilkins(Fr., Calgary, Alberta) has been selected Western Collegiate Hockey Association Rookie of the Week after an outstanding collegiate debut at Michigan Technological University Dec. 6-7.
A 6-2, 185-pound freshman from Calgary, Alberta, Wilkins backstopped the Beavers to a pair of 2-2 overtime road ties at league-rival MTU, piling up 75 saves, a 1.85 goals-against average and a .949 save percentage. He surrendered just four goals in 130:00 of action, had five shutout periods, including two in overtime, and led a Bemidji State penalty-kill unit that held the Huskies scoreless on all 12 of their series power-play opportunities.
In his first collegiate appearance Friday night in Houghton, Wilkins turned aside 36 shots and allowed two goals in the 2-2 overtime draw. He then got the call again in the series finale Saturday, establishing a new career-high with 39 saves in another 2-2 overtime tie.
Wilkins is the fourth member of the BSU men’s hockey program to be recognized for the WCHA’s weekly award in 2013-14. Teammates Markus Gerbrandt (Fr., Edmonton, Alberta) and Brendan Harms (Fr., Steinbach, Manitoba) were selected for the league’s offensive and rookie awards, respectively, Oct. 28, and Phil Marinaccio (Fr., Nobleton, Ontario) earned the league’s Rookie of the Week award Nov. 19.
The league also announced Ferris State University forward Matt Robertson as its Offensive Player of the Week, while Frank Misuraca of University of Alabama-Huntsville earned theDefensive Player of the Week honor.
The Beavers (5-8-5; 5-4-3 WCHA) return to Sanford Center this weekend to wrap up the calendar year by hosting University of Alaska-Fairbanks. The two-game WCHA series will begin at 7:37 p.m. Friday, with the series finale opening face off set for 7:07 p.m. Saturday.
