The Melfort Mustangs got the second all important point in last night’s game against the Nipawin Hawks, to sweep the home and home, New Year’s Eve, New Year’s Day classic.
The Hawks opened the scoring in the second period, on a screened shot by Jayden Piatelli, but Brandon Sloan replied for Melfort about 11 minutes later.
Both teams struggled to find any time in the offensive zone, as majority of the game was played between the blue lines, with pucks being chipped in and out.
Physicality was present at parts throughout the game, including a spirited fight between Carter Coben and Riley Boomgaarden.
Playing in his first game since being injured October 12th, Landon Belchamber proved to be the hero as he notched the overtime winner to launch the Mustangs into a tie with the Hawks for first in the Sherwood.
Jack Romanuik made just 14 saves for the win while the Mustangs fired 27 shots at Joe O'Brien in the Hawks net.
The two rivals with square off 3 more times before the season is complete, with two of those games at the Cage.
The Hawks finished 0/2 with the man advantage, while Melfort went 0/3.
The Mustangs will travel to Yorkton for a home and home with the Terriers, starting Friday as well.
