All Lines Firing

The Melfort Mustangs are in firm control of their SJHL quarter-final series with a 3-0 lead over the Weyburn Red Wings entering Game 4 on Wednesday, March 18 in Weyburn.

The players want to keep playing their style of game entering Game 4 of the best-of-seven series.

“We’re not going in with any different mentality. They’re going to want to win. They are going to have their sticks gripped but we are just going to go play our game like we have been and hopefully we can sneak out a win on the road. We are a good road team,” Mustangs’ forward Tristan Frei said following Game 3.

The crowd at the Northern Lights Palace serves as a motivating factor in the playoffs for the Mustangs’ players.

“Our crowd has just been unbelievable, the kids with the garbage cans have been great. Everybody from little kids all the way up to the adults,” Frei said.

Frei, Travis Mayan, Landon Robin, Sheldon Argent, Dakota Boutin and Justin Boyer scored for the Mustangs.

Josh Lees opened the game scoring for the Red wings, but the Mustangs charged back with six unanswered goals.

The Mustangs’ Richard Palmer made 22 saves.

In what has become a pattern in this series, the Red Wings are flip-flopping their goalies.

Nick Malvin made 13 saves in just over 32 minutes, he was replaced by Jack Burgart who made nine saves.

The Mustangs took a 2-0 series lead with a 6-0 win in Weyburn on Saturday, March 14.

The Mustangs came out strong with Frei scoring two goals in the first four minutes of the game.

“Game 2, two shifts for me and I scored the first two shifts. It was a good feeling, family (Frei is from Regina) was there and I got the boys going. It was important that our line played a good two shifts,” Frei said.

Adam Fauchoux also scored a pair for the Mustangs, Riley Boomgaarden and Nick Hermary scored the other Mustangs’ goals.

Palmer stopped all 27 shots he faced to record his sixth shutout of  the year including the regular season.

The Mustangs started the series with a flurry of scoring in game 1 and ended up on the right side of a 4-3 decision on Friday, March 13 at the Northern Lights Palace.

Boomgaarden, Luc Lemire  and SJHL Most Valuable Player Mayan each scored in the first four minutes of the series opener. Adam Fouchoux scored the other Mustangs’ goal.

According to Frei the players were confident holding a lead. They also expected the Red Wings to push back after the quick three goals to open the series.

“Once we got our fourth goal and they got up to three goals we knew we had played with a lead before and we were going to do it again and that’s what we did,” Frei said.

The Mustangs will try and wrap up the series in Weyburn on Wednesday. Catch the game on 105 CJVR with the pre-game show beginning at 7:10.

If necessary Game 5 will be in Melfort on Friday, March 20 at 7:30 p.m
