After surrendering home ice advantage with an overtime loss in Game 1, the Melfort Mustangs knew they had to answer the bell in hostile territory, and the league's number one seed did exactly that, going into Nipawin Sunday, and edging the Hawks 4-3 to even things up.
The Mustangs out-shot the Hawks 39-26, but needed a third period goal from league MVP Travis Mayan come away with the narrow win.
Shots were 18-6 for the Mustangs in the third period alone, with Nipawin's Joe O'Brien coming close to stealing one, making 35 saves in the loss. Richard Palmer stopped 23/26 for Melfort to pick up the win.
Landon Robin (1g-1a), Regan Wilton and Eric Sinclair joined Mayan on the scoreboard for the Mustangs. Garrett Dunlop was in on all three Hawks goals, scoring twice and setting up the other by Evan Mignault (1g-1a).
