Melfort Mustangs 4 Spruce Grove Saints 3 (OT)
Mustang forward Dakota Boutin is slowly making a name for himself as an overtime hero.
With his name etched in the history books already after a clutch triple OT goal in the Telus Cup Final one year ago, the Moosomin, SK product gave the Melfort Mustangs their first win at the Western Canada Cup.
The Mustangs scored their first goal of the game just 4:48 into the game as Landon Robin dangled his way into the zone and snapped his first goal of the tournament.
Moments later the Saints would tie it up, as Parker McKay snapped home a point shot through a screen that beat Richard Palmer.
Landon Robin would pinball his way onto the scoresheet again in the 2nd period as his wrist shot found its way through a maze of bodies into the back of the net to give the Mustangs a 2-1 lead heading into the 2nd intermission.
The Saints came out flying in the 3rd period and tied it up off the stick of Connor James.
With less than two minutes to go, Justin Boyer thought he played hero notching his 2nd of the tournament to give Melfort the late lead.
Not so fast.
After a pair of Mustangs icings, the Saints got the equalizer off the stick of Riley Simpson with just 13.7 seconds left in regulation.
Cue, Dakota Boutin.
Just 3 minutes into the extra frame, Boutin took a pass in the high slot and beat 16 year old netminder Matt Murray on the blocker side.
With the win, the Mustangs move to 1-1 on the tournament while the Saints drop to 0-2.
Melfort will enjoy a day off on Wednesday before squaring off against the BCHL Champion Penticton Vees on Wednesday night.
Game time is 7:30.
