Penticton Vees 3  Melfort Mustangs 1

For the 2nd time in this 2015 Western Canada Cup, the Melfort Mustangs found themselves behind early in a hockey game.

Bringing their 1-1 record into their Wednesday matchup with the BCHL Champion Penticton Vees, the Mustangs were riding the wave of their OT win over Spruce Grove.

The momentum would be short lived as the Vees opened the scoring just four minutes in.

Former Prince Albert Raider Dakota Conroy was in the right spot at the right time and tapped home his 2nd of the tournament to give the Vees the early lead.

Early in the 2nd frame, the Vees found themselves on a 2 on 1 and it was Patrick Newell potting his 1st of the WCC on a beautiful setup pass from Demico Hannoun. That put the Vees up 2-0 after 40 minutes.

Midway through the third period Tristan Frei pinballed the puck past Vees tendy Hunter Mishka to get Melfort within one.

Frei's goal would be as close as Melfort would get as Penticton would ice it with an empty net late in the third to finish the game and wrap up the round robin with a 3-1 record.

Richard Palmer played in what was arguably his best game as a Melfort Mustang, stopping 32 of 34 shots he faced while Mishka turned aside 21 of 22 shots for the win.

Melfort's record now sits at 1-2. Combine that with Spruce Grove's loss to Fort McMurray on Tuesday night the Mustangs do clinch a birth in the playoff round Saturday.

Where the will finish has yet to be determined.

The Mustangs will wrap up the round robin tonight (Thursday) vs the host Fort McMurray Oil Barons.

Game time is 7:30.
