Mustangs hit the road to meet the Mils

Following a stretch of 5 home games in 9 days the Melfort Mustangs are set to head out on the road for their next 3. Tonight the boys are in Melville as they meet the Millionaires for the second time this season, first in Melville. Last season, Melfort had no problem with the Millionaires winning the season series. Tonight’s game begins at 7:30pm and there will be a broadcast on CK750 with Mat Barrett.

The Melfort Mustangs come into tonight’s game sporting a very rare 2 game losing streak. The 20-8-1-0 Mustangs lost back to back home games last weekend to the Yorkton Terriers and Estevan Bruins. Down a few bodies due to injury, the Mustangs had trouble with the Terriers dropping a 5-2 game Friday night. The following night the Mustangs fell behind to the Bruins before clawing back. They came up just short losing 4-3. Leading the SJHL in scoring is Justin Ball. He hit the 50 point mark on the season, doing it in just 29 games. Teammate Carson Albrecht sits tied with Brandson Hein of Flin Flon for second in league scoring. Albrecht has 22 goals and 24 assists for 46 points on the year. Tanner Zentner makes the line one of the best in the SJHL, as the big center has 22 points in 23 games. Between the pipes Shawn Parkinson and Hunter Arps have been great! They have a combined 16-5-1 record while both have a better than .900 save percentage.

The Melville Millionaires have lost their last 2 games, to the Nipawin Hawks and the Melfort Mustangs. The Mils are on the outside looking in at the playoffs currently. They sit 3 points back of Weyburn for the final wild card playoff spot. Luke Spadafora leads the team in scoring. Combined with his numbers from Humboldt earlier in the year he has 19 points in 27 games this season. Josh Borynec sits second in team scoring with 13 points, while Daniel Liberty has 12. Colby Entz and Berk Berkeliev have been very consistent between the pipes for the Mils this year, they have a combined 8-17-2-2 record.

Tonight’s game kicks off a stretch of 3 straight on the road for the Mustangs. After tonight they meet the Yorkton Terriers on Tuesday before heading to Humboldt next Friday. With the top of the SJHL standings extremely tight this year, closer than usual. Every game is important this time of year. Game time tonight is 7:30pm on CK750.
