Road Trip Preview! Stangs-Stars-Klippers

The SJHL resumes tonight following the 3rd annual SJHL/MJHL Showcase this week. The Melfort Mustangs were well represented with 9 players taking part. Despite a strong showing from the Mustangs the MJHL took the series 4 games to 2. The teams involving Mustangs however, went 2-2.

Now that we’re into the stretch run of the SJHL season the Mustangs head out on the road for a big 2 game road swing. Tonight the Mustangs head to Battleford to play the Northstars, while finishing the trip in Kindersley tomorrow against the Klippers. Game time both nights is 7:30pm.

The Mustangs come into the weekend road trip after picking up 3 of 4 possible points from the Humboldt Broncos last weekend. It wasn’t the start the Mustangs wanted as they blew a 3 goal lead dropping a 5-4 shootout game to the Broncos. However, the single point was still big for the team as they followed it up with a convincing 5-2 win the following night in Humboldt. Alex Rondeau, Tian Rask and Kenzie Arnold are the hottest Mustangs right now, each picking up 3 points last week in the two contests. On the season, the Mustangs sit 4th in the SJHL standings with a 23-14-3-2 record. They trail the Yorkton Terriers by 5 points but currently hold 5 games in hand on those Terriers.

The Battlefords North Stars are top spot in the SJHL, as they have been since Day 1 this year. The Northstars started the season crushing mostly everyone and haven’t really looked back. They fell into a bit of a slide in December losing 4 straight but their 36-7-2-0 record overall seems to be out of reach with only 13-18 games remaining for most teams.

They’ve had their offence come from everywhere this year. Quintin Loon Stewardson leads the team with 49 points, but with 6 players already over the 40 point mark you get a real good sense depth scoring has been the strength of the North Stars this season.
