The Melfort Mustangs finished off the 2021 calander year as the hottest team in the SJHL after going 8-2 in the month of December, which included eight straight wins. The successful stretch has pushed the Mustangs to third place in the SJHL, and first in the Sherwood Division. A plethora of players were key in the Mustangs hot stretch, including a total seven players averaging at least one point-per-game over the month of December.
Here are your Catz N’ Jammers 3 Stars of the Month for December.
1st Star: Marco Lopez (9gp, 8G, 5A, 13Pts)
In the month of December, no Mustang has scored more goals than Marco Lopez, and in the SJHL, just one player had more in December.
The 2001-born forward scored eight goals, and added four assists in 9 games last month. His torrid stretch included two hat-tricks and four straight games with a goal. Lopez is also currently on a seven game point streak.
Overall, Lopez has 17 goals, 14 assists, and 31 points in 33 games this season. He is Top-10 in the SJHL in goals, and is tied for 15th in overall points.
2nd Star: Trenton Curtis (10gp, 4G, 10 A, 14Pts)
There weren’t many games in December that Trenton Curtis wasn’t a force to be reckoned with. Over 10 games in the month, he had points in eight of them, and had five multi-point games.
He scored four goals, and added 10 assists in December and is currently on a six game point streak.
Overall, Curtis has eight goals, and 17 assists for 25 points in 24 games. He currently leads the team in points-per-game and is 15th in the SJHL in that category.
3rd Star: Alex Moar (6gp, 0G, 9A)
He may have not scored in December, but Alex Moar was a playmaking machine over the last month. The 2001-born defenceman had nine assists in just six games played.
Moar also had 3 games where he tallied more than one assist.
Overall, Moar has scored two goals, and added 15 assists with the Mustangs this season. He is currently tied for the team lead in scoring among defencemen.
