Catz n’ Jammers 3 Stars of the Month – September/October

The Melfort Mustangs are 17 games into the 2021/2022 SJHL season and currently sit fourth in the league almost a third of the way through the season.

The Mustangs went 10-6-0-1 through the September and October, and to help the Mustangs to that record, it took a few great performances. Here are the Catz n’ Jammers 3 Stars of the Month.

1st Star: Ben Tkachuk: (17gp, 5G, 12A, 17Pts)

It’s been an excellent start to the year for the Mustangs Captain. It all started with three assists on opening night against Flin Flon on Sept. 24, and Tkachuk took off after that.

Through 17 games this season, the Gronlid, Sask. Product has five goals, and 12 assists for 17 points, tops on the Mustangs, and good for a tie for eighth in the SJHL.

Tkachuk also leads the Mustangs with seven powerplay points.

2nd Star: Curtis Hammond: (17gp, 8G, 4A, 12Pts)

From Fort St. John, B.C., Curtis Hammond has put the puck in the net more than any other Mustang to start the season. Hammond has scored eight times through his first 17 games in a Mustang uniform. His eight tallies are good for a tie for eighth in the SJHL.

On top of his eight goals, Hammond has added four assists to his total, good for 12 points, tied for third on the team.

His three powerplay goals are also tops on the Mustangs through 17 games.

3rd Star: Lucas Ochitwa: (15gp, 2G, 6A, 8Pts)

While he leads the team for defencemen scoring, Lucas Ochitwa has also been a defensive leader for the Mustangs early on.

Through 15 games, Ochitwa has scored twice, and has added six assists to go along with it, good for eight points. Five of those points have been on the powerplay, the second most on the team. It’s also tied for the second most in the SJHL.

The Mustangs are back in game action on Wednesday, Nov. 3 when they host the Flin Flon Bombers.
