They’re Back…- Somers and Venne Back for 2023-2024

They’re back…

The Melfort Mustangs are excited to announce that veteran players James Venne and Zac Somers are both returning for the 2023/2024 regular season!!  Goalie, James Venne and forward,  Zac Somers were originally offered opportunities to move on in their hockey careers but have decided to extend their time with the Mustangs for another season.

Somers finished the 22-23 season with 26 goals and 26 assists in 49 games.  He was 16th in SJHL scoring last season.  Somers is a local to Melfort who was chosen to Team Canada West in the 2022-23 World Junior A Challenge and has an NCAA commitment with the University of Maine.  Meanwhile, Venne finished the season with a 31-17-9 record and a .909 save percentage.   Venne originates from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and has been outstanding for the Mustangs in the last 2 seasons and a main contributor for the club’s defensive success.  Venne will be a top prospect for NCAA Division 1 programs this coming season.

Both players will be entering their 3rd season with the Melfort Mustangs.  When asked, head coach Trevor Blevins said he was excited for their return, “Both players have shown loyalty and commitment to this team and league and trust what the Mustangs can offer for their development.  We are excited for the leadership, knowledge, and experience they will bring on and off the ice.  These two young men are huge assets to this year’s returning group and they will definitely be marquee players in the league at their respective positions.”

Be sure to see Somers, Venne and your other Mustangs play this season in the Palace.  Pre-Season starts on September 11th and Regular Season starts with the Mustangs’ home opener on September 22nd against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.  Tickets are available at our office and online starting September 1st.
