Tkachuk named Captain, McCulloch, Ochitwa, Scherger named Assistants

The Melfort Mustangs have chosen the group that will lead their team through the 2021/2022 season.

2002-born forward Ben Tkachuk has been named Captain, while 2001-born forwards Seth McCulloch, and Tye Scherger, and 2001-born defenceman Lucas Ochitwa have been named Assistants this year.

“I am extremely honoured to be a captain of this team,” said Tkachuk. “We have a very special group this year and I am very excited to lead along with Seth, Lucas, and Tye.”

#9 – Ben Tkachuk: Tkachuk is in his third season with the blue and green and at the time of release, has played a total of 74 regular season and playoff games, scoring 36 points over that stretch. He has 11 points in nine games to start the year. Ben’s father Kelly was also a Mustang Captain in 1990/1991.

#20 – Seth McCulloch: Another third year Mustang, McCulloch has played a grand total of 66 games as a Melfort Mustang, scoring 21 points, and adding 157 penalty minutes. He has nine points in eight games to start this season.

#7 – Lucas Ochitwa: A former first-round SJHL Draft Pick of the Mustangs, Ochitwa has played parts of the last four seasons on the Melfort blueline (1gp in 2018/2019 as a call-up). He’s played in 65 games over that time, notching 20 points and 160 penalty minutes. He has six points in nine games to start the season.

#44 – Tye Scherger: He is in just his second year with the Mustangs, but Tye Scherger is no stranger to Junior A hockey. The former first-round SJHL Draft Pick started his career in Olds, Alta., playing 54 career games before coming to Melfort prior to the shutdown last season. Scherger has played 14 games for the Mustangs over two seasons, adding five points.

The Mustangs are at the Northern Lights Palace tonight for a matchup with the Battlefords North Stars.
