Disappointing Weekend for the ‘Stangs

It was a tough weekend for the Mustangs as the Humboldt Broncos and Battleford North Stars came to town for back to back games.

Friday night saw Melfort hosting the offensive juggernaut that is the Humboldt Broncos, who had already registered 25 goals over their first six games. It’s beginning to look like beating Humboldt will require shutting down their production, which is something Melfort could not do. The Broncos managed to put up six goals against the home team Mustangs, while allowing Melfort only 15 shots and a single goal. The Mustang’s goal came on a power play when Jaxon Joseph broke the goose egg with help from Kalem Zary and Kayle Tosh. Humboldt currently sits atop the league with a record of 7-1-0 and a whopping 38 goals for.

Saturday saw the Mustangs playing in a rematch of their first SJHL Showcase game, as the Battleford North Stars arrived in town looking to repeat on their performance in Warman. If repeating was their goal, they certainly accomplished it, beating Melfort with the exact same score they did on the previous Sunday. The North Stars offense played well, scoring four goals in the contest, but their defense may have won them the game. Melfort was held to only 7 shots in the entire match, and couldn’t not make any of them count. Battlefords is now fourth in the league with a record of 5-3-0.

The Melfort Mustangs will head out on the road this week, as they look for redemption in Battlefords on Tuesday, and travel to Kindersley for their first encounter this year on Wednesday. The Mustangs will then host the Kindersley Klippers on Saturday October 8th. After dropping their last five games the Melfort sits ninth in the league with a record of 3-5-0.
