Game 5 Preview: Mustangs Lead Series 3-1

The Melfort Mustangs and Kindersley Klippers will meet for the 5th time tonight with the Mustangs looking to move on and eliminate the Klippers. Melfort holds a 3-1 series lead in the best of 7 SJHL Quarter-Final after winning the first 3 games. Tonight’s game begins at 7:30pm from the Palace!

The Mustangs jumped out to an early series lead with wins of 2-1 and 5-2 on home ice. The series followed with back to back games in Kindersley in which the teams split. Melfort took Game 3, 4-3. While the Klippers stayed alive with a 2-1 OT win in Game 4.

Heading into Game 5 tonight with a 3-1 series lead the Melfort Mustangs have their second chance to punch a ticket into the SJHL Semi-Finals. Something they haven’t done since winning back to back SJHL Championships in 2016.

Offensively the series has been led by Justin Ball and Carson Albrecht. Just like the regular season the pair of Mustangs have been hard to handle. Racking up 7 goals and 10 points in just 4 games they’ve been a problem for the Klippers throughout the series. On the back end it’s been Jake Hobson doing the scoring for Melfort. Hobson has 2 goals and 2 assists in the series. Both of Hobson’s goals have come at big times, in Game 3 he scored the tying goal 2-2 late in the first period. His second goal of the series was the only Mustang goal in Game 4. Knotting the game at 1 and pushing it into OT.

For the Klippers their offence has been spread out. Five different players have 3 points as Austin Nault, Tyler Traptow, Kyle Bosch, Ty Enns and Blake Kleiner have all found the scoresheet. Between the pipes Justen Close has played all 4 games for the Klippers. He sits with a 1-3 record to go with a 2.62 Goals Against Average and a .921 Save Percentage.

Tonight’s game should be a big one as the expected over 1000 fans will get a treat! It’s also worth noting, any Kids or Students interested in joining the Trash Can Crew can get a free ticket to the game! All you have to do is bring your trash can lid, or pickup one at the ticket office. We got a new shipment of lids in and they’re ready for the Trash Can Crew.
