Mustangs host first placed North Stars tonight!

The Melfort Mustangs continue a quick home stand as they welcome the Battleford North Stars to Melfort tonight. It is the second meeting of the season as the Northstars stole a late OT game on October 9th at the Northern Lights Palace. Tonight’s game begins at 7:30pm and it’s a special night!

Tonight the Mustangs unveil this year’s 3rd Jerseys! For the complete look at the jerseys make sure to come down to the Palace for game time! It’s also Tim Horton’s sponsor night this evening. They will have tons of giveaways as well as the Timbits minor hockey players skating at the 1st intermission!

The Mustangs enter tonight’s game after a tough loss to Melville on Wednesday. The Mils scored with 5 minutes left to play to make it 4-3 and ultimately snuck out with the win. Melfort out-shot the Mils 39-22 but couldn’t manage a late tying goal to send it to extra time. Alex Rondeau, Seth McCulloch and Ben Tkachuk scored the Mustang goals.  Tanner Martin ate the loss between the pipes, which is only his first of the season in regulation.

Tonight kicks off a tough weekend for the Mustangs as after hosting the North Stars tonight, the Mustangs head to Humboldt for a meeting with the Broncos tomorrow.  The Broncos host the Nipawin Hawks tonight.

The Battleford North Stars are still the top dog in the SJHL. The North Stars have now won 13 straight games and sit 20-1 overall. They’ve moved up to 2nd Nationally in the CJHL Top 20 Rankings.

In the SJHL, they’ve opened an 11 point gap already over everyone as the Mustangs sit 13-5-2-1. By comparison Battleford has a 95-46 goal differential, a +49, if you will. The Flin Flon Bombers sit with an 82-63, +19, the second best differential in the league.

Battleford is doing all this despite a top 6 goal scorer in the SJHL, which really shows to their depth. Goaltender Adam Dmyterko is 4th among SJHL goaltenders in save percentage and goals against average. However, he’s the only goalie yet to lose, as he’s 11-0 between the pipes.

Tonight’s game begins at 7:30pm from the Northern Lights Palace.  It does pit the top 2 SJHL teams head to head and will make for a great matchup! Get your tickets online at tickets.melfortmustangs.com!
