What a kickoff to a new season!

What a great start to the 2017-18 campaign for the Melfort Mustangs. After defeating the Nipawin Hawks 4-3 in overtime on Fright night. The Mustangs knocked off the Hawks once again on Saturday 5-3, to start the season 2-0-0.

Friday night was the Mustang home opener as the Stangs opened the season at the Northern Lights Palace. With goals from Tanner Zentner, Jaxon Joseph and Carson Albrecht the Mustangs were able to tie the game late and send it into overtime. In the first overtime of the SJHL season the Mustangs found themselves with a 4 on 3 power-play. Loch Morrison would find the bouncing puck and slide it into the open net to seal the deal and give Melfort that all important, first victory of the year.

The following night the Mustangs would head North for the rematch with the Hawks, this time from Nipawin. The Hawks jumped out to an early lead but with 5 straight Mustang goals from Reed Gunville, Tanner Zentner, Justin Ball, Carson Albrecht and Kayle Tosh. The Mustang would hold a comfortable 5-1 lead after 2 periods. In the third, the Hawks would make it interesting as they would add a pair, but drop a 5-3 decision to Melfort.

The Mustangs start the year 2-0-0 and sit tied atop the divison and league standings in the SJHL. The Mustangs are back on the ice Wednesday in La Ronge vs the Ice Wolves, game time is 7:30pm.
